Dreams

In the movie Zootopia, the parents of the main character, Judy Hopps, had the following conversation in the first 5 minutes of the movie:

Stu Hopps: “Judy, ever wonder how your mom and me got to be so happy?”

Judy Hopps: “Nope.”

Stu Hopps: “Well, we gave up on our dreams and we settled.”

Further in the conversation, her parents say the following to her:

Bonnie Hopps: “It’s great to have dreams.”

Stu Hopps: “Just as long as you don’t believe in them too much.”

Growing up in life I had a very supportive family who cared about me. However, there were times that people told me that aiming for a certain goal is “unrealistic” or “impossible”. People who I admired as well as strangers told me these things. Personally, I get infuriated when I witness the putting down of someone’s dreams and aspirations.

I eventually came to realize that these sort of statements are made because people do not want to see their friends or loved ones fail. They simply wish to “protect” them from the hardships that pursuing your dreams may entail.

However, from my point of view, it is important to know that their concerns are misplaced. Holding your passions inside you is like committing spiritual suicide. If people know in their heart that they have a positive impact they desire to leave, then they should do so regardless of the naysayers.

But I learned that this is apart of the process. It is by design that we are challenged this way. It is a part of the price we pay in exchange for achieving our goals in life. In fact, people often use discouraging statements to encourage themselves to succeed.

There is something unique about going against the grain. Jim Rohn says, “the essence of life is growth.” In order to grow, there must be resistance to overcome. A plane cannot fly without wind resistance. A fire cannot start without friction. A muscle cannot grow without enduring the pain of lifting.

I am reading Napoleon Hill’s “Think and Grow Rich”. In this book, he speaks about how anyone can transmute their desire into success. It lays out in specific details how to achieve anything in life thorough the power of auto-suggestion and faith. As a call to action, I encourage everyone to read this book.
