Choices: The Green Pill

“One’s philosophy is not best expressed in words; it is expressed in the choices one makes… and the choices we make are ultimately our responsibility.”

– Eleanor Roosevelt

Our reality is a composite of our choices. In order to transcend beyond our current state we must choose to do so first and foremost. As human beings we have the power to alter our dominion however we see fit; it is not our lack of options that challenges us, it is our lack of vision.

We live in a society where so many choices are laid out in front of us. Examples are multiple choice questions, the clothes we wear, or the schools we choose. We are bombarded by choices that are placed in front of us by people we do not know. Many of these choices come with circumstances that we may or may not understand. The vast majority of us pick one or more of the choices presented to us without taking the time to critically think beyond those choices.

We have the ability to CREATE our own choices. Neo was faced with an ultimatum; choose the red pill or the blue pill. Neo could very well have CREATED his own pill or even not have chosen a pill at all. I call this the Green Pill. This is when a person creates an outcome for themselves distinct from the options presented to them.

This is not to say that creating our own option is always the best option. What is important  to remember is that we have to capacity to generate our own outcome outside of what is presented to us. On a small scale, we all have “taken the Green Pill” before. Whether it was by creating a short-cut while traveling or using an item for a purpose other than what it was intended to be used for. Large scale examples are Mahatma Gandhi, Thomas Edison and Leonardo Da Vinci.

As I mentioned in previous posts, life is not about finding yourself, it is about CREATING yourself. We have the ability to create our own options instead of accepting the options given to us. No war was ever won, no business was ever created and no invention came into fruition without some level of critical thinking.

One other reason that prevents others from creating their own outcome is the uncertainty factor. People by nature select the choices provided since they may have heard of others being successful doing the same. While this does hold some merit, it is unwise to remain a follower forever. We are all uniquely different human beings and our choices reflect that fact. We all have something unique to offer the world but we will never be able to bring that into fruition by avoiding risk and following in the shadows of others.

People are often under the impression that they do not have a choice when the contrary is true; YOU ALWAYS HAVE A CHOICE. In any given scenario one can conceive another choice given the state of mind. A person must BELIEVE they have other choices that they have yet to discover.

Lastly, it is vital that we take responsibility for our choices. Yes, there are certain situations that are out of our control, but what we CHOSE TO DO about those situations is based on ourselves as individuals. Successful people do not always make the best choices, but they make the absolute best of the choices they made.
